Overview by IAAF |
Dragila had the top seven marks of the season prior to Sydney, and was a clear favourite, particularly as Emma George, Australia’s best homegrown talent – and the woman first to clear 4.60 – was battling injury. George failed to qualify, as did all three Russians. In the final the first surprise came when Balakhonova, Europe’s best, failed to clear her opening height (4.25). As the bar was raised to 4.55 there were five athletes remaining, with Flosadóttir leading from Bártová, Grigorieva, Dragila and Humbert. Only the lissom Grigorieva could clear at the first attempt, and Dragila (on her second jump) was the only one able to emulate the Russian-Australian. Dragila promptly soared over 4.60 – good enough for the gold medal. |

From 1996-1999, Australia's Emma George had been dominant in this new event for women, setting 12 consecutive world records. But she was battling injuries and would not qualify for the final round. The favorite's role fell to America's Stacy Dragila, who broke George's world record in October 1999, and had set three new marks in 2000. She had also won the 1999 World Championships. There were four vaulters remaining after 4.50 metres (14-9) – Dragila, Russian émigré Tatiana Grigorieva competing for Australia, Icelander Vala Flosadóttir, and Czech Daniela Bártová. Bártová had competed at the Olympics in 1992 as a gymnast but had then turned to pole vaulting. In 1995 she had set nine world records, but George and Dragila had surpassed her. Only Dragila and Grigorieva cleared 4.55 (14-11). Dragila went over 4.60 (15-1) on her first attempt to win the gold. Grigorieva had a miss at 4.60 and then passed to 4.65 (15-3) but could not get over the height and Dragila won the gold medal. Grigorieva was the glamour girl of the event, with model-like looks and had recently done a nude photo layout in an Australian magazine. |

The official results of the Women's Pole Vault at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, held on Monday 25 September 2000. There were a total number of 30 participating athletes in this event, which made its Olympic debut. The qualifying round was held on Saturday 23 September 2000, with the qualifying height set at 4.35 metres.
While the pole vault had been a standard Olympic event for a century, dating back to the first revival in 1896, this was the first time the event had been held for women.
The favorite coming in to the event was world champion and world record holder Stacy Dragila, but the home favorite was Soviet transplant Australian Tatiana Grigorieva. 4.55m thinned the crowd to just those two athletes, Vala Flosadóttir setting her National record while taking the bronze medal, to date the only women's Olympic medal for Iceland. With Dragila's 4 misses in the competition, including one at 4.55m, Grigorieva had the lead. At 4.60m, Dragila reversed that with a clean clearance on her first attempt. Grigorieva was unable to match that and strategically moved to 4.65m, 2cm higher than the world record Dragila had set in Sacramento in qualifying to the Olympics, to try to take the win. Neither competitor was able to clear 4.65m, Dragila took the gold and the Olympic record.
