Overview

With the US-led boycott of the 1980 Olympics, it was difficult to get a full field of 16 teams, as seven of the original qualifiers eventually withdrew. The original qualifiers were as follows – Soviet Union as the host nation; German Democratic Republic (GDR) [East] as the defending champion; four teams from a UEFA (Europe) Olympic Qualifying Tournament (Czechoslovakia, Norway, Spain, Yugoslavia); three teams from a CAF (Africa) Olympic Qualifying Tournament (Algeria, Ghana, Egypt); three teams from an AFC (Asia) Olympic Qualifying Tournament (Iran, Kuwait, Malaysia); two teams from a CONCACAF (North & Central America/Caribbean) Olympic Qualifying Tournament (Costa Rica, United States); and two teams from a CONMEBOL (South America) Olympic Qualifying Tournament (Colombia, Argentina). But due to withdrawals related to the boycott, the following replacements were made – Nigeria replaced Ghana, Zambia replaced Egypt, Iraq replaced Malaysia, Syria replaced Iran, Cuba replaced the United States, Venezuela replaced Argentina, and Finland replaced Norway.

The teams faced the now standard Olympic format, with the 16 teams separated into four four-team groups, that played a round-robin to determine the top two teams in each group, who advanced to the quarter-finals and the knock-out phase. The matches were played at five stadia in the Soviet Union, with three in Russia, one in the Ukraine, and one in what was then Byelorussia. The venues were Lenin Stadium and Dynamo Stadium in Moskva, Russia; Kirov Stadium in Leningraf (St. Peterburg), Russia; Republican Stadium in Kiev, Ukraine; and Dinamo Stadium in Minsk, Byelorussia.

Four Eastern Bloc nations made the semi-finals, with Czechoslovakia winning the gold medal, 1-0, over the GDR, and the Soviet Union defeating Yugoslavia, 2-0, for the bronze medal.

Summary

The Western boycott caused almost half of the qualified teams to withdraw: Argentina, Egypt, Ghana, Iran, Malaysia, Norway and the United States. Many of their replacements could not impress at Moscow, and the Cuban team even made it to the quarter-finals after a 0-8 loss to the host nation. The four teams from Eastern Europe, East Germany, the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia, had no trouble defeating the non-European teams and all placed for the semi-finals.

East Germany reached its second consecutive final, but without the players that had taken the gold in Montreal, while Czechoslovakia played its third Olympic final, losing in 1920 and 1964. The rules required that all amateurs were allowed to compete in Moscow, with the exception of European or South American players who had contested the 1978 World Cup qualifiers or finals. Several of the Czechoslovakian players had, in fact, competed at the 1980 European Championships in Italy. The final remained goal-less until the 77th minute, when substitute [Svoboda] put in a header to decide the tournament.

The football tournament at the 1980 Summer Olympics started on July 20 and ended on August 2. Only one event, the men's tournament, was contested. Seven qualified countries did not participate joining the American-led boycott in protest of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

Sixteen teams were divided into four groups:

  • Group A (USSR, Cuba, Venezuela, Zambia)
  • Group B (Colombia, Kuwait, Nigeria, Czechoslovakia)
  • Group C (Algeria, Spain, GDR, Syria)
  • Group D (Costa Rica, Finland, Iraq, Yugoslavia)
In the technical following the competition, FIFA ed that: "Compared with the 1979 World Youth Tournament in Japan and the 1978 World Cup finals in Argentina, the standard of football at the Olympic Football Tournament was generally of an inferior quality,"
